Licensing FAQs

What is art licensing?

Art licensing is essentially the process of renting artwork from a designer. In this case, you’re welcome to license one of my surface pattern designs—either non-exclusively or exclusively (more on that below).

As the licensee, you pay a fee to use the design in a particular way, for a defined purpose and period of time, under the terms we agree on together.

Where can I view your portfolio?

While I don’t have a traditional portfolio at this time, almost every design available in my Spoonflower store is available to license non-exclusively.

You’ll also get a strong sense of my style and the type of work I can create for exclusive use. If you have something in mind, I’d love to chat—just fill out the Licensing Enquiry Form.

What is a non-exclusive license?

A non-exclusive license allows you to use an existing design of mine for production and sale—usually within one product category.

This means the same design may also be available to other brands or retailers during your licensing period, and it may remain available via print-on-demand partners such as Spoonflower, where others can purchase it for personal use.

📝 Note: You do not need a license to sell finished goods made with fabric purchased from Spoonflower, Hawthorne Supply Co, or other retail partners.

What is an exclusive license?

An exclusive license gives you access to a design that won’t be licensed to anyone else within your nominated category and timeframe.

Usage terms (including duration, product category, and pricing) are agreed upon before any work begins.
As the designer, I retain copyright and may continue to license the same design in other categories unless we’ve agreed otherwise.

At the end of the licensing term, you’ll have the first right to renew before the design becomes available again.

Who owns the copyright to the artwork?

I retain all copyright and ownership of my designs and any derivative works at all times.

At this stage, I do not offer full buyouts.

How much does a license cost?

Licensing is quoted on a case-by-case basis.

Pricing depends on several factors including the type of license, duration, product category, and scale of production. Once you’ve submitted the Licensing Enquiry Form, I’ll be able to provide a tailored quote based on your project needs.

Can you customise the colours?

Yes—for most of my artwork, I can adjust colours to better align with your palette.
Please include these preferences when you fill out the form, or feel free to email through swatches or reference images.

Are your designs seamless?

Yes. All designs repeat seamlessly on all four sides—ready for continuous printing.

Can you provide layered artwork?

Yes, just let me know if your manufacturer requires a layered file format, and I’ll prepare the artwork accordingly.
